Main Streeting
Atascadero
  • Atascadero Main Street is not a social organization,
although we have good times planning and working together.
  • Atascadero Main Street is not a "one-man show." If we all
pull our weight, the job gets done. If not, we all get
    embarassed.
  • Atascadero Main Street is not an ego trip or a political
stepping stone. We are all doing what is needed to improve
    our downtown, period.

Members of the Atascadero Main Street Program have
entered into a grand mission. This mission requires three
things of them:

Passion - The desire to make downtown bigger and better than it is.
Productivity - The drive to turn passion into real-world
accomplishments.
Involvement - The commitment of presence and contributions to the
Atascadero Main Street Program, its boards, committees and members.

Four Points of the Main Street Program

Organization - Building an effective, volunteer-driven management
organization, guided by professional staff with broad-based public and
private support.
Promotion - Creating a unified, quality image and developing
promotion strategies that bring people to the district.
Design - Enhancing the design and appearance of the district through
historic preservation, encouraging new construction, developing design
guidelines and long-term planning.
Economic Restructuring - Retaining and strengthening existing
businesses, recruiting appropriate new business, and developing
strategies to sustain the economic vitality of the district.

Why is Main Street important?

  • Main Street is a symbol of Atascadero's economic health, quality
of life, city pride and our community's history.
  • A vital Main Street creates jobs and local sales, which contribute
    to a stronger tax base.
  • Main Street is a good incubator for new small businesses.
  • A vital Downtown reduces sprawl and a health core protects
    property values.
  • A revitalized Main Street increases the community's options for
    goods and services.
  • Main Street provides an important civic forum where community
    members can congregate and socialize.
  • Many Main Street districts become tourist attractions and, with
your support, Atascadero can become a tourist destination.
The Atascadero Main Street Program was initiated
in 2001 by the local Redevelopment Agency
specifically for the enhancement of the local
Downtown Business Improvement District. This
approach to downtown revitalization was created by
the
National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The
California Main Streets program has
provided in-depth training and technical services
to more than 70 California communities that
have passed the state's official Main Street
certification process, and dozens more have
informally used the Main Street Approach™ to
guide their revitalization work.  Our combined
efforts are making the historic Colony District a
place of which to be  proud!
